Whitchurch Fencing Club is a friendly club for fencers of all abilities. We welcome new members, as well as visiting fencers, and those looking for another night’s fencing.

The club offers a good evening’s épée fencing, along with competitive membership rates, footwork sessions, and coaching at a variety of levels – from beginners’ courses for those wishing to learn to fence, to provision for competitive fencers. We are committed to the personal development of all our fencers, and so run an awards scheme, alongside coaching.

The club runs three annual épée competitions: the O’Sullivan Cup, the Whitchurch Shield, and the Whitchurch Club Championship.

The club started life as an evening class for beginners to fencing, in Whitchurch Adult Centre, run in the premises of Whitchurch High School, Cardiff.

Originally organised by the late Glynne Reynolds in 1967, the class was run from the late 60s until his retirement from fencing in 1990 by Barrie Diamond.

A notable feature of the class was the number of “beginners” who re-enrolled each year, rather than migrate to other clubs, such was the successful club-like atmosphere of the class.

Eventually the nucleus of “experienced beginners”, along with some other regulars, was sufficient to represent a viable club in their own right, and Whitchurch Fencing Club started independent sessions in 1987, in the newly opened Llanishen Leisure Centre, Ty Glas Avenue.

In 2014, it was decided to move to a larger venue, Rhiwbina Memorial Hall, which not only enables the club to offer a larger number of pistes on which to fence, but also provides the space for increased coaching provision.
